Joe Jackson, “Steppin’ Out” (1986)
I don’t know if Joe Jackson had such lofty intentions when he wrote “Steppin’ Out” but this song is like the ultimate retail shopping anthem. I say this because whether I’m at the grocery store, a department store, or Burlington Coat Factory, this song always seems to be present. Not that it’s a bad thing as I happen to legitimately enjoy it.
There are certainly some aspects of the song that make it an ideal choice for the retail environment. It’s upbeat, definitely a toe-tapper, equal parts jazz and pop. The lyrics are for the most part inoffensive and optimistic, as Jackson sings from the point of view of a man inviting a woman to forget their troubles and live in the moment. Imagine hearing this in your local grocery store. You probably couldn’t help but think, “Yes, Joe Jackson, I will live it up! I’m going to buy the Green Giant can of corn instead of the store brand!” And that’s why this song is on every store’s playlist.
