This Old Boombox

An ongoing sophisticated, intellectual dialogue about phat jamz, face melters and toe-tappin pop tunes.

Sean’s Top 5

Sorry 2008, musically I just want that in to you…
Within the last month the world has been bombarded with top lists of 2008. What ever happens to those list anyway? So Using 20/20 Hindsight I wanted to look back into the past. Hop into the DeLorean with me as when venture back… way back, to the year 2003!

Top 5 albums of 2003 (from 2009 perspective)

1.The Strokes, Room on Fire

When it came out people thought it sucked compared to the their first record. People were wrong.

2.Andre 3000,The Love Below

03 was pretty much the beginning of the end for Hip Hop. Nas started making albums in which the titles were way more provocative than the songs themselves and Common made his Hippie album. The Hip Hop king that Year was Curtis Jackson (50 cent). In Da Club wasn’t a big record, for about 3 months it was the only record. Then that fall Andre 3000 did something brilliant. Release a crazy ass record that was stylistically all over the place and yet focused on one idea, to be what no other hip hop album had ever been-not a Hip Hop album. As a bonus Hey Yeah took over for In Da club as the frat party jam of the moment.

3.The White Stripes,Elephant

Stripped down, raw, simple, yet powerful. Good record.

4.Jay-Z,The Black Album
Wouldn’t it have been so much cooler if he truly let this be his last album.

5.The Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Fever To Tell
Influential, cool, and ahead of its time. Could make my list just based on Maps, one of the best songs of decade.

True Story**
I would DJ at primarily hip hop clubs, on weeknights I would have more leniency on my set lists. If I got drunk enough I would always play Maps on Wed. and Tuesday nights. People got pretty confused. They just wanted to hear some Paul Wall and Mike Jones. I think the Bartenders and Bouncers thought I was secretly a really depressed guy. Which wasn’t far from the truth. Think about it, I was an alcoholic 25 year-old DJing at hole in the wall bar on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront on Tuesday night in the dead of winter. I am surprised I never went home one night and made the DJ equivalent of Springsteen’s Nebraska in my kitchen.

Top songs 2003

1.Kanye West, Through the Wire
Who the *uck knew. I would argue that this is still one of his top 10 records ever.

2.The Killers Mr.Brightside

Damn great song that would lead to damn great record in 04. Sadly, the words “damn great” and “the Killers “ don’t hang out much anymore, nowadays they kick it with “I guess see what they are trying to do”.

3.Pharell, Frontin

This was the big song of the summer I graduated from college. Good thing I had it to help me deal with the crushing reality that the real world sucks and most degrees aren’t worth the paper they are printed on. Oh and the Jay-z verse is good, but a bit to brief. That Hova always leaving us wanting more.

4.The Postal Service, Such Greats Heights
Before it was the UPS theme song it was easily the best song on their sad sack album. I once summed up their lead singers voice by saying its so “Manby Panby”.

5.50 cent, What up Gangsta

I have seen this record start 2 bar clearing brawls. I have been told at least 3 times to never play it at a club again. If I ever get married the moment this song comes on at the reception will hopefully crack the top 10 most awkward moments of the evening.
