This Old Boombox

An ongoing sophisticated, intellectual dialogue about phat jamz, face melters and toe-tappin pop tunes.

Translation:
It's a blog where three guys write about pop music.

Queen, “We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions” (Live Aid 1985)

The other night I watched a bit of the Live Aid DVD. It was supposed to be a who’s who of pop music brought together to bring relief to Africa. But as I watched the performances, I realized the result was more quantity over quality as most of the sets seemed rushed, poorly mixed, unrehearsed - and in the case of the Led Zeppelin “reunion” - out-of-tune.

But then you have Queen, which pretty much came in and slayed the 82,000 people at Wembley Stadium. The BBC named it the greatest live performance ever in a 2005 poll. It’s amazing to watch as not many bands can get that kind of reaction out of an audience. But then again, not many bands have frontmen as good as Freddie Mercury was.
